This isn’t just a dance teacher. This isn’t just an “oopsie” moment of forgetfulness. This is a masterclass in white entitlement wrapped in pastel leotards and weaponized hugs.

👀 Here’s What Happened:

At a recent competition, a group of young dancers stood on stage after performing. Coach Nadia handed out hugs to her white students, one by one. Warm, affirming, familiar.

And then there was Shaniah—six years old. The only Black (bi-racial) girl in the lineup.

She stepped forward.
Arms open. Heart open.
And Nadia? She walked the fuck away.
Refused to hug her. Refused to acknowledge her.

This wasn’t a miss. This wasn’t a slip.
This was deliberate, cold, public rejection of a child who had done nothing but show up and exist in Black skin.

Shaniah later asked her mom:

“Why didn’t she hug me?”

Because Nadia Boucher is the kind of woman who thinks her racism is too subtle to get caught.

When the family spoke up? The studio didn't apologize.

They kicked the child out.
They kicked her siblings out.

This is why integration without protection is bullshit.

Black parents—rightfully trying to get their kids “the best”—enroll them in white spaces, hoping access equals safety.
But behind every elite dance program, every “prestigious” school, every polished brochure with a sprinkle of diversity... there’s a Nadia. Or ten.

And it’s not just about hugs. It’s about messaging.

“You don’t belong.”
“You’re not like the rest.”
“You’ll always be the afterthought.”

That is the internal monologue planted in Black kids by white educators who smile in your face and erase you on stage.

And Let’s Be Real About the Bigger Threat:

This woman is not just a dance coach.
She’s a special education teacher in Simsbury Public Schools.

Because if she’s this comfortable showing open, unapologetic bias on a stage with cameras rolling—what the fuck do you think she’s doing behind classroom doors?
To neurodivergent Black kids?
To children who already live under a microscope, only to be met with racist indifference disguised as “discipline” or “structure”?

You think this is about a hug?
This is about harm with institutional access.
This is about giving someone with obvious bias the power to shape how vulnerable children are treated—and then acting shocked when the results are trauma in therapy and kids who grow up thinking they're defective.

You think cults are something other people fall into—groups with secret handshakes and brainwashed followers who “can’t think for themselves.”
You think a cult has to look like a compound, have a leader, demand rituals and oaths.
You think you’d know if you were in one.

But the most dangerous cults don’t need walls, uniforms, or pledges of loyalty.
They don’t need to trap you in a compound.
They just need to convince you that you were never trapped at all.

That’s the cult you were born into.
Not just your family.
Not just your school.
Not just society.

The entire structure of your life—from the moment you took your first breath—was designed to turn you into someone who follows the script without even realizing there was a script to begin with.

Language: Inherited.
Culture: Assumed.
Expectation: Embedded.

From the moment your mother’s body released you—voluntarily or not—you weren’t free.
You were filed.

And they called it family.

You didn’t choose your name.

We got a ship.

We were dragged from our homes.
Stripped of our names.
Whipped out of our languages.
Branded with someone else’s beliefs.

We weren’t approached with conversation.
We were subdued with force.

We didn’t get to hear the pitch and say “no thanks.”
We were sold.
We were raped.
We were bred.
We were broken—and then expected to smile about it.

Colonization Wasn’t About Saving. It Was About Replacing.

You didn’t show up because we were lost.
You showed up because you needed someone to control.

You called us savage, then stole our practices.
You called us godless, then made us worship your image.
You called us ignorant, then outlawed our literacy.

Colonization wasn’t outreach.
It was overwrite.

And when we made something out of the pieces you left us—when we built culture, rhythm, language, style, faith, joy—you tried to take that, too.

Modern Colonization Wears Sunglasses and Says “Namaste”

I lived in Placencia, Belize.

Ten years ago, it was barefoot bars.
Local food.
Laughter that didn’t require a dollar menu.
Rhythm without regulation.

Now?
It’s expats sipping wine in yoga pants, building overpriced condos on sacred soil, talking about how they “love the vibe” while filing zoning complaints about the music.

This is colonization through comfort.
Capitalism with a passport.
White folks finding “simpler living” and then ruining the simplicity because it doesn’t cater to their standards.

They say they love the culture.
But culture, to them, is only lovable when it serves them.

And when it doesn’t?
They want change.

They want coffee shops instead of corner stores.
They want silence instead of street food.
They want safety, which means control.
And they always, always want control.

White People Don’t Want to Understand. They Want to Center.

You don’t move into spaces to be part of them.
You move into spaces to rearrange them.

You don’t want to be changed.
You want to be celebrated.

You don’t want to assimilate.
You want assimilation to come to you.

Your history books call it “progress.”
We call it what it is: invasion in slow motion.

“If You Don’t Like It, Go Back to Africa”

That’s the line, right?
The MAGA mic drop.

But let’s get honest.

We didn’t come here.
You brought us.

You erased our history.
Then told us we had no culture.
You burned our gods.
Then told us we were godless.
You sold our bodies.
Then told us we were criminal.

And now? Now that we’ve rebuilt, redefined, and reclaimed what you tried to annihilate?

You feel erased?

Nah.

You’re just seeing what it looks like when we stop trying to be part of you.

You Were Never the Answer. You Were the Disruption.

You didn’t civilize us.
You interrupted us.

You didn’t uplift us.
You destabilized us.

Integration didn’t make us equal.
It just gave you access to monitor, co-opt, and police us more closely.

This is the age of mirror-holding.

And what you see now is a world that no longer needs your permission to breathe.

We’ve seen what happens when you get to define the game.
Now we’re rewriting the rules.

We know how colonization works.
Because we lived it.
And now?
We’ve mastered the playbook.

America is a new colony.
And we alllllll know how to do it now.

Let them leave.
Let them say what they say.
Let them be who they are.

But we’re not letting anymore.

We’re not waiting for transformation.
We’re not hoping they come around.
We’re not preaching grace to people who sold our grandmothers like furniture.

We’re done.
Not with rage.
But with release.

So Keep Your Spaces. Keep Your System. Keep Your Fear.

You spent generations trying to erase us.
Now you’re afraid we might outnumber you.

You built Planned Parenthood to kill us—until your daughters started using it too.
You created breeding farms for slaves—now you whine about population shifts.

You’re not being replaced.
You’re being outlived.

And when we build what you can’t enter,
when we thrive in ways you can’t police,
when we say no, not because we’re mad but because we finally can—you break.

But when the Pirahã said, “We’re good,” he lost everything.

• Banning passports and banning people

• Burning bridges and building walls

Let me be very clear:
You don’t get to host the world when you’ve made it violently clear the world isn’t welcome.

This country isn’t building unity.
It’s performing leadership while it bulldozes belonging.
It’s using nationalism as a stage prop—while dragging the bodies of those who don’t fit the image off set.

And now it wants to be the face of global celebration?

No.

This is supposed to be a joint event with Canada and Mexico.
But how does that make sense when we’re busy silencing the very people we’re supposed to be standing beside?

America wants a standing ovation while exiling the very players who are the game?

Then let them sit alone.
Let them host an empty stadium.
Let them explain to the world why no one showed up.

Because until this country earns back the right to host a global stage—
It doesn’t get the ball.

We didn’t get a seat at the table.
We got served on it.

Before integration, we had our own.
Our own schools. Our own doctors. Our own libraries.
Our own coaches, our own bus routes, our own damn rhythm.

Yes, it was born from segregation.
Yes, it was underfunded.
But it wasn’t broken.
We weren’t broken.

We had systems. We had pride. We had culture.
We made bricks out of crumbs.
Built empires on borrowed land.
Turned dialect into defiance.

And they couldn’t stand it.

Because we weren’t supposed to survive without them.
We definitely weren’t supposed to thrive.

So they burned it.
Tulsa. Rosewood. Wilmington.
And the names they erased before we ever learned them.

They didn’t grant us access.
They handed us erasure dressed as opportunity.
Assimilation dressed up like equality.
And they sold it back to us as progress.

Integration didn’t save us.
It undid us.

We got access to their schools—
but we lost our teachers.
Lost our Black principals.
Lost our cultural pedagogy.
Lost the people who saw us as whole before we ever learned to shrink.

We didn’t just integrate classrooms.
We integrated trauma.

We learned how to shrink.
How to contort.
How to code-switch before we could read.

We were taught how to make ourselves palatable.
Because exceptionalism wasn’t a celebration—it was a muzzle.

We didn’t get to bring our full selves.
We had to leave our mothers’ tongues in the hallway.
Check our joy at the door.
Trade our wholeness for their approval.

And still be called angry when we refused to smile through it.

Respectability became a leash.
Excellence became survival.

We weren’t applauded for thriving.
We were tolerated for performing.

The reward?
A seat at a rigged table with a side of imposter syndrome.

We weren’t included.
We were filtered.

We weren’t being raised—we were being reprogrammed.
And some of us wore it so well, they called it professionalism.

But we remembered.

We remembered the cookouts that turned into strategy sessions.
The churches that doubled as freedom schools.
The barbershops that were town halls.
The grandmothers who carried revolutions in their purses.

We remembered the cipher before the syllabus.
The drum before the diploma.
The lineage before the LinkedIn.

We remembered who we were before they told us what we had to become.
And we started asking the question we were never meant to ask:

What if we were never supposed to integrate?
What if we were supposed to reclaim?

Because what did we actually integrate into?

A system that never wanted us whole.
A culture built on our erasure.
A machine that needs our labor—but chokes on our presence.

We weren’t asking to be included.
We were asking to stop dying.

They ignored the ask.
Handed us assimilation.
And then called it equality.

They called Trevor’s comment “dumb.”
I call it lived memory.
I call it truth.

Because for some of us, integration didn’t give us identity.
It cost us the chance to form one.

I’m a 46-year-old light-skinned, light-eyed Black woman raised in the South.
I went to private schools where I was called an Oreo.
Where white kids asked why I didn’t “look Black.”
Where my hair and nose were jokes, not features.

And the Black kids didn’t know me either—
because they hadn’t been around rich white kids since they were four.

A lot of what I knew about “being Black” came from TV.
Or out the window of the car,
driving through neighborhoods I didn’t live in—
but was somehow still expected to be part of.

I had my family. But I’m an only child.
And my parents were in the same system I was.
Trying to make it work.
Trying to be the people we were all lied to and told we could be.
Trying to survive systems that were never designed to hold us.

My mother was one of the first Black students at Newcomb College at Tulane.
My father was the first Black Student Body President at Tulane Law—
and later, the first Black Secretary of Commerce for the State of Louisiana.

I had shoes to fill.
And an image to uphold.

Now they’re watching it happen again.
Watching everything they worked to overcome get passed down—
Not to their grandkids (I’m smarter than that)—
but to the generations they thought they were protecting.

They are both lifelong educators.

My mom was the first Black teacher at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans.
The year she came on board was the same year they ended the policy
that allowed teachers’ children to attend for free.

She was good enough to teach their kids—
but not welcome to the same benefits as everyone before her.

Still, they showed up.
They taught generations—Black, white, brown, all of them.

My dad still teaches today.
He now teaches the child of a former student from decades ago.

And now they’re watching it all get trashed in sixty days.
It’s the biggest slap in the fucking face.

They’re watching it all unravel.
And it’s breaking their hearts.

We did it with Tulsa.
We did it with Rosewood.
We thought integration was helping us.
But it wasn’t.
It was helping them.

And now we know.

So maybe—even though most of us have adapted,
even though the world says it values diversity—
maybe until Americans (ALL Americans) learn the actual lesson,
we focus on rebuilding our communities for ourselves.

Not for them.

That doesn’t mean buying Black everything.
(I wrote about that, too.)
But it does mean building schools, clinics, centers, and spaces
that don’t require translation.
That don’t need permission.
That aren’t built to be palatable.
They’re built to be ours.

They’ve only been “less than” because we were told they were.
Because we relied on federal systems to protect us.
And those systems still won’t do their job.

So maybe it’s time we ask
why we wanted to belong to them in the first place.

Because what have they truly given us
that we weren’t already building on our own?

History taught me that.
Just… a lot fucking later.
Because they only taught it once a year.
If that.

This is reclamation, not revisionism.
FAFO2025.

Being a Black business owner is one of the most confusing identity crises you can have. You’re expected to “represent” the race while also proving that your Blackness isn’t the only reason you’re in business. You have to be exceptional but not too successful. Relatable but not struggling. Professional but not “whitewashed.” And somehow, the people judging you the hardest? Are the very people who are supposed to be your community.

And that’s where the mindfuck really begins.

Why Don’t We Trust Our Own Businesses?

Let’s start with the most uncomfortable truth in this whole conversation:

A lot of us—myself included—have internalized the idea that Black businesses aren’t as professional.

I hate that it’s true, but I know you’ve felt it too. The hesitation. The quick Google search to check for reviews. The extra bit of skepticism when booking a service. The worry about whether the experience will be “on point” or if you’re about to get hit with an unprofessional, “Oh, my bad. I’ll get back to you soon.”

And before anybody tries to deny it, let’s just be real for a second:

• If a white-owned business screws up, we still go back.

• If a Black-owned business screws up once, we’re out.

• If a white business has mediocre service, it’s just “eh, that place is mid.”

• If a Black business has mediocre service, it’s “That’s why I don’t mess with Black businesses.”

Why is the bar different?

And more importantly, why are we more comfortable taking risks on white businesses than we are with our own?

Because white businesses—even the shitty ones—already have legitimacy. They don’t have to prove they belong in the game. They just exist, and people assume they know what they’re doing. Meanwhile, we’re out here fighting to be seen as “real” businesses in the first place.

The DEI Paradox: Why Blind Support is Insulting

This is where things get messy as hell. Because while I fully believe that we should support each other, I also think blind loyalty is patronizing.

If I only shop with you because you’re Black, I’m not treating you like a business—I’m treating you like a cause.

That’s what they do with DEI. That’s why people think diversity hires are bullshit. Because in their minds, it’s never about skill—it’s about filling a quota. And yet, we turn around and apply that same logic to Black businesses. “Go support them! They’re Black!” No mention of quality. No mention of expertise. Just Blackness.

And that shit does not help us.

• It makes our businesses feel like charity cases instead of legitimate competitors.

• It lowers the bar for what’s considered “good” service.

• It reinforces the stereotype that we can’t stand on our own merit.

Would you feel proud if someone only hired you because they needed a Black face in the room? No? Then why the fuck would we apply that same weak-ass energy to our businesses?

We don’t need charity. We need trust.

The Catch-22: Black Success is Always a Problem

But let’s say a Black business does everything right. They’re polished, professional, top-tier. They’re killing it. Do they finally get to just exist? Nope. Because now they’ve got a new problem:

They’re “too successful.”

• If a Black business stays small? “They need more funding, more support.”

• If a Black business grows fast? “They’re selling out, they’re going corporate.”

• If a Black business caters mostly to Black customers? “They’re limiting themselves.”

• If a Black business caters to everybody? “They don’t care about their own people.”

What the actual fuck do y’all want?

We watch white businesses scale all the time and nobody says shit. Nobody calls Starbucks a “white-owned coffee shop.” But let a Black-owned company hit big numbers, and suddenly, it’s a problem. Suddenly, they’re “leaving the community behind.”

So let’s be clear: Black businesses are not obligated to stay accessible to make you comfortable. If a company expands and you feel abandoned, that’s a you problem.

What’s the Solution? The One Thing We Never Do

So what’s the answer? How do we fix this?

We act like every other community and just normalize trusting our own people.

No extra announcements. No forced loyalty pledges. No weird guilt trips. Just buy the shit you like and move the fuck on.

That’s how other communities operate. They don’t scream “support Asian businesses!” They just go to them without hesitation. They don’t require their businesses to be perfect before they trust them. They don’t feel the need to qualify why they shop within their own community.

They just do it.

And that’s what we need to do:

• Normalize trusting our own people without hesitation.

• Normalize second chances. Stop dropping Black businesses over one bad experience while giving white businesses endless grace.

• Normalize constructive critique. Stop acting like accountability is an attack.

• Normalize Black success. Stop expecting Black-owned businesses to stay small just because it makes you feel better.

• Normalize high standards. We don’t need to settle for subpar just to be supportive.

And above all else, stop making this shit so complicated.

Some of y’all spend more time debating why you should or shouldn’t support Black businesses than it would take to just buy the damn thing and keep it moving.

That’s the real problem. The fact that this is even a discussion when it should just be a natural practice.

So no, I’m not about to beg people to support Black businesses. I’m done with the think pieces. I’m done with the excuses.

I’ll do what makes sense. You do what makes sense. And if that doesn’t involve buying Black? At least be honest about why.

3. Keep You Busy Surviving: When you’re spending all your energy masking, adapting, and second-guessing yourself, there’s no room left for self-discovery. They don’t want you asking, “Who am I?” because that might lead to you saying, “Wait, why the hell am I following their rules?”

Step 3: Get Comfortable With the Mess

Here’s the thing: figuring out who you are isn’t a clean process. You’re going to try things, fail spectacularly, and change your mind a dozen times. That’s not weakness—that’s growth. Identity isn’t static, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or boring.

RECLAIMING MY BLACK CARD

Nobody gets to tell me how Black I am.

Not white people.
Not Black people.
Not even me.

I grew up thinking my Black Card had to be activated—only to find out it wasn’t a credit card, but a debit.

I had to put Black in to get Black out.
And the kind of Black you put in? That mattered.
Because it either credited or debited your account.

There was a whole system I clearly never got.

BLACK. AMERICAN.

In America, I was defined by race.
In Belize, I was defined by nationality.

But for the first time?

I didn’t have to feel like I had something to prove. I could just be who I was and try not to be a dick.

• No forced performances.

• No quiet calculations on how much Blackness was enough.

• No worrying if I was playing a part or playing it wrong.

Just existing.

And that?
That was new.

NOT THE ONLY BLACK KID IN THE ROOM

For the first time, I wasn’t Black. I was American.
And that’s WAAAAY fucking worse.

We are the worst. Objectively.

Stepping outside the U.S., I realized America had sold me a version of myself—
and I bought it. No questions asked.

Because from my perspective? There wasn’t anything better for cheaper.
(And you know I love a deal!)

But yeah, it was crazy, because for the first time, I felt more accepted among Black Americans abroad than I ever did in the States.

That says everything.

A BLACK CARD REALITY CHECK

For years, I thought my identity was a fixed point.

That being Black had rules, limitations, requirements.
That I had to earn it, prove it, deserve it.

Then I left.

And suddenly?
None of that mattered.

For the first time, I wasn’t trying to prove I belonged. I was just trying to prove I wasn’t an American asshole. (I’m an asshole who happens to be American—get it right!)

Because identity isn’t about acceptance.
It’s about who gets to define you in the first place.

And for the first time?
That wasn’t America.

BLACK PRIVILEGE VS. STRUGGLE

Privilege didn’t mean protection.

It just meant I had access. (Should I choose to accept it—clearly, I did not.)

And not for lack of trying or opportunity.

I just don’t want people to think I didn’t work for something (that’s the Black)
but I also suck at accepting recognition for said work.
Ouch. That’s the ADHD.

And I definitely don’t know how to accept opportunities without wondering if I’m about to disappoint someone else.

It’s one thing if I try something and disappoint myself.
It’s quite another if I disappoint…not me. (But that can be unpacked another day.)

However, access didn’t stop me from—

• Getting followed like I’m shady. (Ok fair, but I mean, like these assholes just assumed, not like they knew me!)

• Teachers writing it off when I underperformed because it was expected and I was probably only there because my mom was a teacher.

• Teachers writing me off when I overperformed because they saw I was "keeping up" and I should be grateful for even being there.

• Being the token for all things race-related then having to pretend I understood from personal experience—when, at the time, the only racism I actually felt was being placed in those situations to begin with.

• Ignoring those situations to avoid having to reconcile my feelings of imposter syndrome other than excusing it as—"Well, that’s just how you grew up."

By the way, in case you were wondering—throwing ADHD into the mix?
Helps nothing and no one.

I’m a walking diversion.

Imagine feeling like a DEI hire in your own race. Smh.

I wasn’t in the country last time. And maybe that was for the best.

Because this time?
I’m here. And I’m paying attention.

THE SLOW-BURNING RAGE.

I was living in Belize when a pack of small-dicked, incel Nazis made a live-action remake of White Men Can’t Jump—but instead of basketball, it was basic fucking human decency.

And they marched onto my alma mater’s grounds.

They desecrated the school I worked my ass off to get into.

They invaded the spaces where my friends and I lived.

I know my people are good.

Not because we’re safe.

And that’s one thing you learn early being Black in America—whether you think you’re living the "Black experience" or not.

We don’t get to be surprised.

ACCEPTANCE VS. AUTHENTICITY

I spent years trying to prove something.

To myself.
To others.
To people who probably weren’t even watching.

And for what?

To earn something that was never up for debate?

This Is Not a Transaction—It’s a Heist

I wasn’t disconnected.
I was conditioned.

→ To see my Black Card as an optional membership, not an inheritance.
→ To believe that belonging had prerequisites.
→ To think that if I didn’t struggle the same way, if I didn’t relate the same way, then maybe my Black Card wasn’t fully activated.

So I played the game…

• I monitored my balance.

• I let them dictate my credit limit.

• I rarely tested its limits in public.

Because you never know when, where, or how they’ll decide to run your credit—until the day they decline the charge.

I wasn’t about to fuck around and find out.

It catches up with you eventually.

One day, you check your statement.
One day, you realize your balance was never negative.
One day, you realize the debt was never yours to begin with.

And when you get that swift kick to the cooter?

That’s the moment your New Negro Era begins.

"You picked the right time, but the wrong bitch"—or whatever Kendrick said.

BLACK-ISH

I had access.
I had education.
I had privilege.

What I didn’t have? A solid identity.

I knew I was Black.
But I didn’t feel Black.

I was “smart, but socially immature.”
I was “articulate, but SO loud.”
I don’t “look Black.”
I don’t “sound Black.”
I don’t “act Black.”

So now my kid brain has to figure out:

What the fuck makes you Black??

Because of that, I thought I didn’t deserve to be Black.

Even worse, I grew up believing my “Black”—
the kind that didn’t always have to worry about blatant discrimination,
the kind that let me believe “you don’t act Black” was a compliment instead of an erasure—
made me feel accepted, and that somehow made me… better?

What it really made me?

A little bitch.

I don’t know if I leaned into it because I wanted to or because I had to.

But I was a kid—I didn’t know any better.

Because if I didn’t feel like them, if I didn’t fit into what Black was supposed to be, then what was I?

YOU’RE BLACK?

New Mexico was the first place where diversity wasn’t a buzzword.
It just was.

I was still one of the few Black kids.
But for the first time? That didn’t feel like a problem I had to solve.

Don’t get me wrong—the jokes were still there.

The “You’re Black?” response gets real old, real quick.

But at least it’s easy to ignore when it’s a joke.

Imagine having to explain basic genetics to a white kid who swears you have to be mixed because their only reference for Blackness is the cast of Family Matters—
(and sadly, so is yours!)

AN OREO BEFORE THEY HAD FLAVOR

So yeah, it was mostly just a joke.
A throwaway line.
A persona.
A script.

Until I blinked and realized—I had been playing the role for years.

And it shaped me more than I realized.

(Much like all the lies pushed by the agenda, but I digress #iykyk)

And now?

I wasn’t sure if I had chosen it
or if it had been chosen for me.

What I did know? I had gotten really good at it.

And here’s the thing about jokes:

They have expiration dates.

When the joke’s not funny—you’re just the punchline.

MORE LIKE “LACK” HISTORY, AMIRITE?

I never let myself learn Black history because I never thought it was mine.

I figured I’d get to it in February.
Then February came and went, as did my interest.

I’m sure the stories were inspiring, but I was undiagnosed and bored.

Dennis Reynolds said it best:

"It’s like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I’m not in any of them, and nobody’s having sex, I just… don’t care."

But you can ignore history all you want.

That doesn’t mean it’s gonna ignore you.

PASSING ME BY

For every white space that let me in, there was a part of myself I had to check at the door.

The price of being “safe” for white spaces was being unsafe in my own identity.

→ Every time I swallowed a comment.
→ Every time I let a joke slide.
→ Every time I let them say, “You’re not really Black.”

I didn’t see how it was a slap in my own face.

I was unintentionally perpetuating the same stereotype I was subconsciously breaking.

I had no idea.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF…

Growing up, I thought I could think it, but couldn’t say it.

And obviously, my ass struggles with that.

But I just thought I had to because—manners.

And I always had, in the back of my mind, the disappointment of my mother.

That I didn’t live up to my potential.
That if I didn’t succeed, everything she worked so hard for was for nothing.

And that included being too much.

My mom wished I were more ladylike.
She got a loud-ass tomboy.

My dad wished I’d bring home a Black boy.
Good luck.

Sadly, I grew up chasing white boys because that’s all that was around.

And now?

Ya girl enjoys a bit of a challenge—you know what I mean.

I’LL TAKE “THINGS I WISH I KNEW EARLIER FOR $100,” ALEX

I wish I had learned what being Black really meant.

Not just the struggle I saw in Louisiana state history books.
(Yeah, I was doomed.)

Not just the “good Blacks” I heard rumblings of every February.

But all of it.

But who wants to read about struggle and hardships when everyone around you is white and rich?

All that did was reiterate the fact that I was not.

Fuck this bullshit.

White comfort always took priority over my authenticity.

And I let it.

Never again.

For every ‘you’re not like them,’ I got back a ‘Not like us.’
